MUSC 2033 Musicianship III

3 credits
An exploration of chromatic harmony and larger-scale formal structures of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Topics include mode mixture, Neapolitan chords, augmented sixths, enharmonic modulation, extended tertian harmonies, and analysis of sonata, rondo, and variation forms. Students develop skills in harmonic analysis, part-writing, and thematic development. Aural skills advance to include emphasis on chromatic melodic dictation, complex rhythmic patterns, and recognition of chromatic harmonic progressions. Attention is also given to more complex melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic materials in dictation, including modulations, mixed meters, and regular and irregular rhythmic subdivisions. Computer programs are used to further develop visual and aural skills. Prerequisite:  MUSC 1043  or transfer equivalent.
