MUSC 1033 Musicianship I 3 credits Review of fundamentals as listed in MUSC 1002 with additional studies. This course establishes the foundational elements of Western music theory, with a focus on written and aural fluency. Topics include pitch notation, clefs, scales, key signatures, intervals, rhythm and meter, triads, seventh chords, and basic diatonic harmony. Students begin voice-leading in two and four parts, analyze simple phrase structures, and explore tonic, predominant, and dominant functions. Aural skills include sight singing in major and minor keys, simple melodic and rhythmic dictation, use of solfege with Curwen hand signs, and introduction to harmonic dictation using I-IV-V progressions. Prerequisite: MUSC 1002 , passed Music Theory Placement Test, or appropriate Advanced Placement (AP) Music Theory test score.
