Learning Outcomes

The learning outcomes for the Recreation and Sport Management program are based upon the standards of the National Recreation and Parks Association and the North American Society for Sport Management. Students completing the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Recreation and Sport Management are expected to:

Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the historical, theoretical, and philosophical foundations of recreation, sport, and leisure services.
Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of recreation and sports management principles, including facility operations, event planning, marketing, and risk management.
Apply ethical principles and professional standards to address challenges in recreation and sports settings.
Exhibit strong verbal, written, and digital communication skills to engage with stakeholders, build community partnerships, and effectively manage team dynamics.
Exhibit leadership and team-building abilities essential for guiding staff, volunteers, and stakeholders.
Use evidence-based practices and critical thinking to solve problems and enhance operational effectiveness in recreation and sports organizations.

Concentrations

Students may choose at least one concentration; concentrations vary in credit hours. Courses in each concentration are unique. Duplicate course credit will not be applied among concentrations. Completion of concentration courses requires a minimum grade of C-.

Athletic Administration Concentration (16 Credit Hours)

Choose 9 hours from any BUSI, COMM, EXSC, PHED, PSYC, MGMT, and RECR courses or by approval of the program coordinator and the school chair.

Electives

In addition to core curriculum (40-44 credit hours) and major course requirements, students must complete elective coursework appropriate to their degree. A minimum of 120 credit hours is required for most bachelor’s degrees, including elective coursework. Students are strongly encouraged to work with their advisor to identify courses that complement their program area.
