Purpose
The Division of Religion at Southern Wesleyan University exists to serve Christ and His Church by equipping ministers and scholars of the Gospel in the Wesleyan tradition who are biblically grounded, theologically discerning, contextually aware, ministerially effective, and spiritually mature.
Learning Outcomes
- Biblically Grounded: Students will demonstrate knowledge of the Bible and skill in the hermeneutical process.
- Theologically Discerning: Students will articulate and appropriate well-reasoned Christian theology from a Wesleyan perspective.
- Contextually Aware: Students will analyze historic and contemporary contexts of the Christian faith to inform their approach to ministry.
- Ministerially Effective: Students will demonstrate proficiency in core ministerial competencies, including leadership, biblical proclamation, evangelism, discipleship, and pastoral care.
- Spiritually Mature: Students will demonstrate measurable growth in personal and communal spiritual practices, ethical discernment, and vocational clarity consistent with a maturing Christian faith.
Ordination
Graduates from any of the three tracks in our Religion major will have completed all the educational requirements for ordination in The Wesleyan Church.

Specified Core Curriculum
Students earning a bachelor’s degree must complete all Core Curriculum requirements. The following specific core curriculum course(s) is required. Major Courses
Completion of major courses and concentration courses requires a minimum grade of C-. Ministry Field Education Requirement
All Religion majors must earn a minimum of three credit-hours of practical ministry education in a church or other ministry context through RELG 3550 (Ministry Internship) or a combination of RELG 3550 and RELG 4550 (Ministry Residency). These practical ministry field education courses may be repeated for credit, with a maximum total of 15 credit hours. Christian Ministry Concentration Courses

In addition to core curriculum (40-44 credit hours) and major course requirements, students must complete elective coursework appropriate to their degree. A minimum of 120 credit hours is required for most bachelor’s degrees, including elective coursework. Students are strongly encouraged to work with their advisor to identify courses that complement their program area. Summary

Our optional ministry residency program provides an opportunity for Christian ministry majors who are seeking a fully immersive ministry experience while completing their education. Students who have achieved senior standing may apply for 6-12 hours of residency in a church or other ministry context which may be completed in two semesters (combined with online courses) or one larger credit-hour semester. Our students have completed this residency locally, in other states, and even in other countries. Note: Students may not take more than a maximum total of 15 credit hours of practical ministry field education. |
