Exercise Science (BS)

Program Goals

The Exercise Science major is designed to allow students to learn the science of the human body: biology, chemistry, kinesiology, and physics, as well as psychology, spirituality, and emotional health as it applies to human function, disease prevention, and quality of life. Graduates from this program may enter a variety of professions including physical therapy, athletic training, chiropractic medicine, athletic coaching, and corporate wellness. This major allows students to be eligible for the Enhanced LIFE Scholarship and the Enhanced Palmetto Fellows Scholarship.

Learning Outcomes

Students completing the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Exercise Science are expected to be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge of the basic sciences and their application to exercise science;
  • demonstrate the ability to measure physiological outcomes and exercise prescriptive techniques, including the ability to utilize various assessment equipment related to skeletal, muscular, neurological, cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic systems;
  • demonstrate the ability to analyze and assess human movement in a variety of developmentally appropriate levels and contexts and the ability to develop comprehensive wellness programs for health purposes for an individual, groups, or even industry, and for healthy and at-risk populations;
  • demonstrate how psychological and spiritual components relate to exercise, health promotion, weight control, etc., and how a Christian world view should promote wellness.

Note: Students planning to attend graduate or professional programs following completion of their BS degree should regularly review the needed prerequisites for their desired programs and work with their advisors to incorporate these classes into their program of study.

Exercise Science BS Requirements


Specified Core Curriculum


Students earning a bachelor’s degree must complete all Core Curriculum  requirements. The following specific core curriculum course(s) is required.

Electives


In addition to core curriculum (40-44 credit hours) and major course requirements, students must complete elective coursework appropriate to their degree. A minimum of 120 credit hours is required for the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Exercise Science, including elective coursework. Students are strongly encouraged to work with their advisor to identify courses that complement their program area.
