Biochemistry is one of the five traditional subdisciplines of chemistry and is the study of the chemistry of biology. This degree will provide students opportunities to seek education in professional school or graduate school in Biochemistry, or obtain job opportunities in industry. This major has been submitted for approval for the STEM Enhancement with the Life or Palmetto Fellows Scholarships.
Learning Outcomes
Biochemistry graduates should be able to :
- Have firm foundations in the fundamentals and application of current chemical and scientific theories in various fields of chemistry and biology (organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, genetics, and cellular and molecular biology).
- Gain extensive technical knowledge and demonstrate ability to design, carry out, record and analyze the results of chemical experiments.
- Locate, comprehend, and communicate about scientific literature, and present literature and laboratory findings in oral and written form.
- Develop skills of analysis, synthesis, critical thinking, problem solving via the scientific method.
Note: Students planning to attend graduate or professional programs following completion of their BS degree should regularly review the needed prerequisites for their desired programs and work with their advisors to incorporate these classes into their program of study.

Biochemistry BS Requirements
Major Courses
A course in differential equations and a course in statistics are strongly recommended. Completion of major courses requires a minimum grade of C-.
Electives
In addition to core curriculum (40-44 credit hours) and major course requirements, students must complete elective coursework appropriate to their degree. A minimum of 120 credit hours is required for most bachelor’s degrees, including elective coursework. Students are strongly encouraged to work with their advisor to identify courses that complement their program area.
