Forensic Science (BS)


Federal CIP: 43.0106 Forensic Science and Technology

Forensic Science is the application of science to study evidence in cases related to criminal and civil laws that are enforced by agencies in a criminal justice system. The Forensic Science majors are designed to allow students a choice in the area of specialization while providing a solid foundation in the relevant basic science disciplines. Major requirements are based on the accrediting standards of the American Association of Forensic Scientists (AAFS) (https://www.aafs.org/FEPAC)

Learning Outcomes

Students completing a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Forensic Science degree are expected to:

  • demonstrate understanding of forensic science professional practice topics of quality assurance, ethics, and evidence identification, collection, and processing
  • demonstrate technical mastery of laboratory skills within the concentration
  • comprehend, explain, and analyze basic science phenomena within the concentration

In addition to core curriculum (40-44 credit hours) and major course requirements, students must complete elective coursework appropriate to their degree. A minimum of 120 credit hours is required for the Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science degree, including elective coursework. Students are strongly encouraged to work with their advisor to identify courses that complement their program area.
