Social Science (BS)

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of the social science program, students should be able to do the following:

  • Interpret major societal and social trends from different theoretical and philosophical perspectives.
  • Explain personal interactions and the development of social institutions through a variety of theoretical and practical perspectives.
  • Display the critical thinking skills and research skills necessary to interpret and contribute to current social science research.
  • Engage in research or practice experience.

Social Science BS Requirements


Specified Core Curriculum


Students earning a bachelor’s degree must complete all Core Curriculum  requirements.  The following specific core curriculum course(s) is required.

Major Courses


Completion of major courses and concentration courses requires a minimum grade of C-.

Human Diversity/Cultural Diversity


Three (3) Hours selected from the following list or by approval of the Coordinator of Social Science and the Division Chair of Social Science.  

Select three (3) Hours


Optional Concentrations


These courses apply to the 18 credit hours required for the major (see above).  Completion of concentration courses requires a minimum grade of C-.

Law and Public Policy Concentration


Fifteen (15) Hours selected from the following or by approval of the Coordinator of Social Science and the Division Chair of Social Science.

General Sociology Concentration


Fifteen (15) Hours selected from the following by approval of the Coordinator of Social Science and the Division Chair of Social Science.

Electives


In addition to core curriculum (40-44 credit hours) and major course requirements, students must complete elective coursework appropriate to their degree. At least 27 credit hours must be upper level (3000-4999).  A minimum of 120 credit hours is required for most bachelor’s degrees, including elective coursework. Students are strongly encouraged to work with their advisor to identify courses that complement their program area.
