EDUC 5953 Science of Reading: Teaching Reading Practices 3 creditsThis course provides a comprehensive exploration of evidence-based instructional practices for teaching reading, grounded in the Science of Reading. Students will learn how to design and deliver explicit, systematic, and engaging reading instruction that addresses the five essential pillars: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Emphasis is placed on Structured Literacy approaches, which are diagnostic, cumulative, and responsive to individual student needs. The course integrates current research, practical strategies, and hands-on lesson development to prepare educators to implement high-impact reading practices in diverse classroom settings.
