EDUC 5943 Science of Reading: Content Area Reading and Writing 3 credits

This course explores the application of Science of Reading principles to reading and writing in content areas such as science, social studies, and mathematics. Students will examine how foundational literacy skills-phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension-support academic success beyond English Language Arts. The course emphasizes evidence-based strategies for teaching students to read, write, and think critically with complex, discipline-specific texts. Participants will learn to design and implement explicit, systematic instruction that builds academic literacy, supports vocabulary development, and fosters content understanding for diverse learners in upper elementary, middle, and high school settings. For Project Reading (S.C. Teachers) students only.
